It astounds me how reasonably intelligent people can be so suckered by the image that PR machines create. For an example I'll use how former President George W. Bush is viewed compared to current President Barrack Obama. And this blog isn't to support either man - just point out what so many people are missing.


Bush was marketed as a down home, country boy without the polish that many politicians seem to project. He mispronounced words, took his time making decisions, placed his family and religion above all else. People say he is stupid but I think it is the other way around. PR people, image consultants, speech writers all created the persona we see on TV and in the news. Those mispronounced words were purposely written that way to enhance his country charm. And whatever you think of Bush, it worked. He took the highest office in the country twice.

Then we have Obama. A well polished man of African descent. The time was just so right to bring someone like him into the political arena. With a major economic fall that is worldwide, though some blamed it totally on Bush, the United States was ready for something different. They needed new blood in the White House, someone who could appear like an underdog which an African American man would. He was up against the 'old boys club' and he took the victory. From his catchy slogan to his well rehearsed, teleprompter fed speeches, Obama appeared to be the saviour. In the fashion of the memory of the late President Kennedy's term, once again the White House would be a place of hope, of progress, of fashion, of beautiful people.

Yeah, Obama was the exact opposit of Bush but don't think that he started that way. He has image consultants that groomed him, PR machines that produced him and of course the speechwriters that gave him the words to say.

Like I said this is not a blog condemning either man but an observation. And I wonder how many of you actually get it. The next time you look at a politician or any other public figure and say 'what an idiot', think again. Are you actually the one that isn't so smart?
