Yesterday I was walking home from my doctor's appointment. It is quite a long walk but I have my mp3 player on and I sing, dance and have a blast. I also smile at most of the people I see. Not that many returned the gesture yesterday.
A week before I would have received beams of greetings from most everyone but not yesterday. A cashier at a store told me it was because January is a rough month - people are broke and the month isn't as exciting as December. So? It is the same every year isn't it? Every December we wind ourselves up for the parties and the gift giving and welcoming in another year then comes January and we have to pay the bills and get back to life. That doesn't mean that you have to be depressed about it.
Just because I walk along smiling and singing doesn't necessarily mean that my life is better than yours. It may be but it may not be too. It may just be different but I firmly believe that if a person can smile and sing and dance through the tough times then he or she can handle it.
I get that life is hard for many but being gloomy isn't going to help. It won't pay off the bills any faster; it won't cure disease nor will it ease tension and stress. You don't have to walk around singing and dancing as I do - I am sort of weird - but you can do things to make life a little easier. Whenever you are walking and you see someone walking towards you, smile. You may not get one in return but it just might make you feel whole lot better.
